ὃς γὰρ ἐὰν θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι ἀπολέσει (he/she/it will lose) αὐτήν.

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it.

12. πορευθῶμεν γὰρ πρὸς

πορευθῶμεν γὰρ πρὸς τήν θαλάσσην εἰς τὸ εὑρίσκειν ὧδε τινὰς ἡμέρας ἀγαθὰς ἐν τῷ ἡλίῳ.

πορευθῶμεν γὰρ πρὸς τήν θαλάσσην

εἰς τὸ εὑρίσκειν ὧδε τινὰς ἡμέρας ἀγαθὰς ἐν τῷ ἡλίῳ.

For let us go to the lake in order to find here some good days in the sun.

And again he began to teach beside the lake.

11. αὕτη ἡ γυνὴ λίθον

αὕτη ἡ γυνὴ λίθον καλὸν ἔχειν θέλει ἐπὶ τῇ χειρὶ αὐτῆς δεξαμένη αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἠγαπηκότος αὐτήν.

αὕτη ἡ γυνὴ λίθον καλὸν ἔχειν θέλει

ἐπὶ τῇ χειρὶ αὐτῆς

δεξαμένη αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἠγαπηκότος αὐτήν.

This woman is desiring to have a precious stone on her hand after receiving it from the one who has loved her.

10. εἰ νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται

εἰ νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται, φάγωμεν καὶ πίωμεν, αὔριον (tomorrow) γὰρ ἀποθνῄσκομεν.

εἰ νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται,

φάγωμεν καὶ πίωμεν, αὔριον (tomorrow) γὰρ ἀποθνῄσκομεν.

If the dead are not raised, let us eat and let us drink, for tomorrow we die.

9. οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἔφαγον

οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἔφαγον ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ (desert) τὸ μάννα καὶ ἀπέθανον· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἄρτος ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβαίνων, ἵνα τις ἐξ αὐτοῦ φάγῃ καὶ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ. ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἄρτος ὁ ζῶν ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς· ἐάν τις φάγῃ ἐκ τούτου τοῦ ἄρτου ζήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ ὁ ἄρτος δὲ ὃν ἐγὼ δώσω (I will give) ἡ σάρξ μού ἐστιν ὑπὲρ τῆς τοῦ κόσμου ζωῆς. Ἐμάχοντο (they were quarreling) οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες· πῶς δύναται οὗτος ἡμῖν δοῦναι (to give) τὴν σάρκα [αὐτοῦ] φαγεῖν (to eat); εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐὰν μὴ φάγητε τὴν σάρκα τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ πίητε αὐτοῦ τὸ αἷμα, οὐκ ἔχετε ζωὴν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.

Ἐμάχοντο (they were quarreling) οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες·

πῶς δύναται οὗτος ἡμῖν δοῦναι (to give) τὴν σάρκα (αὐτοῦ) φαγεῖν (to eat);

εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς·

ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν,

ἐὰν μὴ φάγητε τὴν σάρκα τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ πίητε αὐτοῦ τὸ αἷμα,

οὐκ ἔχετε ζωὴν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς.

“Your fathers ate the manna in the desert and they died; This is the coming-down-from-Heaven bread that anyone from it may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from Heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, he will live eternally, and the bread which I will give on behalf of the life of the world is my flesh.” Then the Jews were quarreling with each other saying, “How is this man able to give us ªhisº flesh to eat?” Then Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I am saying to you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you are not having life in yourselves.”

καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς πῶς αὐτὸν ... ἀποκτείνωσιν.

καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς πῶς αὐτὸν ... ἀποκτείνωσιν.

And the high priests and the scribes were seeking how they might kill him.

7. Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν

Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ (only) ἔδωκεν (he/she/it gave), ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται (he/she/it might perish) ἀλλ᾿ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον. οὐ γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα κρίνῃ τὸν κόσμον, ἀλλ᾿ ἵνα σωθῇ ὁ κόσμος δι᾿ αὐτοῦ.

Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον,

ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ (only) ἔδωκεν (he/she/it gave),

ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται (he/she/it might perish) ἀλλ᾿ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

οὐ γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα κρίνῃ τὸν κόσμον,

ἀλλ᾿ ἵνα σωθῇκόσμος δι᾿ αὐτοῦ.

For in this manner God loved the world, that he gave the only son in order that everyone who is believing in him would not perish but would be having eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world in order that he might judge the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
