Comments

υπερ in the genitive means "in behalf of", so how is the meaning of that phrase simply "is for us"?  

hyper with the genitive does indeed mean 'in behalf of' but it has wider meaning than that. A rough literal translation would be "is in (or 'on') behalf of us) which would translate better 'is for us.' The 'for' is equivalent to 'on behalf of.'
