Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his descendant (spermati | σπέρματι | dat sg neut). Scripture does not say, “and to descendants,” (spermasin | σπέρμασιν | dat pl neut) referring to many, but “and to your descendant,” (spermati | σπέρματι | dat sg neut) referring to one, who is Christ.

Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants (sperma | σπέρμα | nom sg neut) of Abraham? So am I.

But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed (spermatōn | σπερμάτων | gen pl neut) its own body.

So I ask, has God repudiated his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.

And as Isaiah predicted, “If the Lord of hosts had not left to us descendants (sperma | σπέρμα | acc sg neut), we would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah.”

This means it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants (sperma | σπέρμα | acc sg neut).

neither are they all children of Abraham because they are his descendants (sperma | σπέρμα | nom sg neut); on the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your descendants (sperma | σπέρμα | nom sg neut) will be named.”

Hoping against hope, Abraham believed that he would become the father of many nations according to what had been spoken, “So will your descendants (sperma | σπέρμα | nom sg neut) be.”

For this reason the promise is based on faith, that it may depend on grace and be made certain to all his descendants (spermati | σπέρματι | dat sg neut), not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

For the promise that he would be heir of the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants (spermati | σπέρματι | dat sg neut) through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
