Now Herod the tetrarch heard (ēkousen | ἤκουσεν | aor act ind 3 sg) about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed because it was being said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
When (akousas | ἀκούσας | aor act ptcp nom sg masc) Jesus heard (akousas | ἀκούσας | aor act ptcp nom sg masc) this, he said to him, “Do not be afraid, only believe, and she will get better.”
In response he said to them, “Those who hear (akouontes | ἀκούοντες | pres act ptcp nom pl masc) and do the word of God are my mother and my brothers.”
“Take care, then, how you hear! (akouete | ἀκούετε | pres act ind 2 pl) For whoever has — more will be given to him; and whoever does not have — even what he seems to have will be taken away from him.”
But as for that in the good soil — these are the ones who, having (akousantes | ἀκούσαντες | aor act ptcp nom pl masc) heard (akousantes | ἀκούσαντες | aor act ptcp nom pl masc) with an honest and good heart, hold firmly onto the word and bear fruit through patient endurance.
As for what fell among the thorns — these are the ones who hear (akousantes | ἀκούσαντες | aor act ptcp nom pl masc), but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not bring fruit to maturity.
Those that fall on rock are the ones who, when they hear (akousōsin | ἀκούσωσιν | aor act subj 3 pl) the word, receive it with joy; but they have no root — they believe for a while but in a time of testing they fall away.
Those along the path are the ones who hear (akousantes | ἀκούσαντες | aor act ptcp nom pl masc) — then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.
He said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but to the rest I speak in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing (akouontes | ἀκούοντες | pres act ptcp nom pl masc) they may not understand.
