a[gw undergoes what is called "Attic reduplication." This means that the word both reduplicates and then augments the reduplicated alpha (ag - agag - h[gagon). This is a second aorist. The gamma has changed to a chi in the aorist passive because of the following theta, in compliance with the rules (#24.9).
