As he was about to be brought into the barracks, Paul said to the commanding officer, “Is it allowed for me to say something to you?” He replied (ephē | ἔφη | imperf act ind 3 sg), “Do you know Greek?
And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said (phēsin | φησίν | pres act ind 3 sg), “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple keeper of the great Artemis and of her image that fell from heaven?
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: (ephē | ἔφη | imperf act ind 3 sg) “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are a very devout people.
But Paul said (ephē | ἔφη | imperf act ind 3 sg) to them, “They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and now would they send us away in secret? No indeed! They themselves must come and escort us out.”
And Cornelius said (ephē | ἔφη | imperf act ind 3 sg), “Four days ago at this hour, I was praying at the ninth hour in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing
And he said (ephē | ἔφη | imperf act ind 3 sg) to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another race, but God showed me that I should call no person common or unclean.
And as they traveled along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said (phēsin | φησιν | pres act ind 3 sg), “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
