“To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame (phloga | φλόγα | acc sg fem) of fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze, has this to say:
“Now when forty years had passed, there appeared to him in the desert near Mount Sinai an angel in the flame (phlogi | φλογί | dat sg fem) of a burning bush.
And calling out he said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ (phlogi | φλογί | dat sg fem)
And the tongue is a fire! The tongue is a world of iniquity among our members; it defiles the whole body, sets on fire (phlogizousa | φλογίζουσα | pres act ptcp nom sg fem) the course of our life, and is set on fire (phlogizomenē | φλογιζομένη | pres pass ptcp nom sg fem) by hell.
For Scripture says, “Do (phimōseis | φιμώσεις | fut act ind 2 sg) not muzzle (phimōseis | φιμώσεις | fut act ind 2 sg) an ox that is treading out the grain,” and, “Worthy is the worker of his wage.”
