We (hēmeis | ἡμεῖς | nom pl 1st) are from God. The person who knows God listens to us (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st), but whoever is not from God does not listen to us (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st). By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

And the one who keeps his commandments resides in him, and he in him. And by this we know that he abides in us: (hēmin | ἡμῖν | dat pl 1st) by the Spirit whom he has given to us (hēmin | ἡμῖν | dat pl 1st).

And this is his commandment: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he gave us (hēmin | ἡμῖν | dat pl 1st) the commandment.

Dear friends, if our (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st) conscience does not condemn us, we have confidence in the presence of God,

that if our conscience condemns us (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st), that God is greater than our (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st) conscience and knows all things.

And by this we will know that we are of the truth and will set our (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st) conscience at rest in his presence,

By this we have come to know love: that he laid down his life on our (hēmōn | ἡμῶν | gen pl 1st) behalf. And we (hēmeis | ἡμεῖς | nom pl 1st) are obligated to lay down our lives for the brothers.

We (hēmeis | ἡμεῖς | nom pl 1st) know that we have crossed over from death to life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love remains in the realm of death.

See what great love the Father has given to us (hēmin | ἡμῖν | dat pl 1st), that we should be called children of God — and so we are! The reason the world does not know us (hēmas | ἡμᾶς | acc pl 1st) is that it did not know him.

And this is the promise that he made to us (hēmin | ἡμῖν | dat pl 1st) — eternal life.
