This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one is able to perform the miraculous (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut) signs that you are doing unless God is with him.”
Now while Jesus was in Jerusalem during the festival of Passover, many people put their trust in his name, for they saw miraculous signs (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut) he was performing.
Jesus did this, the first of his signs (sēmeiōn | σημείων | gen pl neut), at Cana in Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Upon seeing Jesus, Herod was very glad, since for a long time he had been wanting to see him, because of what he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some miraculous sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut) done by him.
“There will be signs (sēmeia | σημεῖα | nom pl neut) in the sun and moon and stars; and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring and surging of the sea;
there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues. There will be dreadful portents and great signs (sēmeia | σημεῖα | nom pl neut) from heaven.
And they asked him, saying, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what is the sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | nom sg neut) when these things are about to happen?”
As the crowds were getting larger, Jesus began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it looks for a sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut), but no sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | nom sg neut) will be given to it except the sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | nom sg neut) of Jonah.
