So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council together and said, “What are we going to do? For this man is performing many signs (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut).
Many people came to him and were saying, “John performed no miraculous (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut) sign, but everything he said about this man was true!”
Then some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform miraculous (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut) signs (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut) like this?” And there was a division among them.
Yet many of the crowd believed in him, saying, “When the Christ comes, he will not perform more miraculous (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut) signs than this man has, will he?”
Then they said to him, “So what miraculous (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut) sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut) will you perform that we may see it and believe in you? What will you do?
Jesus responded saying, “I tell you the solemn truth, you are not looking for me because you saw miraculous (sēmeia | σημεῖα | acc pl neut) signs, but because you ate the loaves and had all you wanted.
So when the people saw the miraculous (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut) sign (sēmeion | σημεῖον | acc sg neut) that Jesus had performed, they began to say, “This is truly the prophet who was to come into the world.”
