Once again Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, called out to them, |

A third time he spoke to them, “What evil did this man do? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.” |

He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but (de | δέ | conj) he handed over Jesus to their will. |

And (de | δέ | conj) there followed him a great crowd of the people, and among them were women who were mourning and wailing for him. |

Turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. |

And when they came to the place called “The Skull,” there they crucified him and the criminals — one on his right and (de | δέ | particle) one on his left. |

The people stood by, watching. The rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One!” |

The soldiers, also, mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine |

In fact, there was an inscription above him, “This is the King of the Jews.” |

One of the criminals hanging there kept deriding him, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” |

But (de | δέ | conj) the other responded with a rebuke, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence? |

And we indeed justly. For we are receiving what we deserve for what we did; but (de | δέ | conj) this man has done nothing improper.” |

because the light of the sun had been eclipsed. The curtain of the temple was torn down the middle. |

Then Jesus, crying out in a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Having said this, he breathed his last. |
