And when the demon had been driven out, the man who had been mute began to speak. The crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen (ephanē | ἐφάνη | aor pass ind 3 sg) in Israel.”
so that you (phanēs | φανῇς | aor pass subj 2 sg) will (phanēs | φανῇς | aor pass subj 2 sg) not appear (phanēs | φανῇς | aor pass subj 2 sg) to others as fasting, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“And when you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces so that they will appear (phanōsin | φανῶσιν | aor pass subj 3 pl) to others as fasting; I tell you the truth, they have their reward.
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in synagogues and on street corners that they may be seen (phanōsin | φανῶσιν | aor pass subj 3 pl) by others. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward.
After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared (phainetai | φαίνεται | pres mid ind 3 sg) in a dream to Joseph, saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”
Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them exactly what time the star had appeared (phainomenou | φαινομένου | pres mid ptcp gen sg masc).
But as he pondered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared (ephanē | ἐφάνη | aor pass ind 3 sg) to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit.
The Son of Man has come both eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look! A glutton (phagos | φάγος | nom sg masc) and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
