The light shines (phainei | φαίνει | pres act ind 3 sg) on (phainei | φαίνει | pres act ind 3 sg) in the darkness, and the darkness has not understood it.

but these words seemed (ephanēsan | ἐφάνησαν | aor pass ind 3 pl) like nonsense to them, and they did not believe them.

by some that Elijah had appeared (ephanē | ἐφάνη | aor pass ind 3 sg), and by others that a certain one of the ancient prophets had risen.

Now when Jesus arose early on the first day of the week, he appeared (ephanē | ἐφάνη | aor pass ind 3 sg) first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.

You have heard the blasphemy! What appears (phainetai | φαίνεται | pres pass ind 3 sg) to be right to you?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.

So you also outwardly appear (phainesthe | φαίνεσθε | pres pass ind 2 pl) to others as righteous but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are like whitewashed tombs that look (phainontai | φαίνονται | pres pass ind 3 pl) beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and all kinds of filth.

When the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared (ephanē | ἐφάνη | aor pass ind 3 sg) as well.
