Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commanding (chiliarchon | χιλίαρχον | acc sg masc) officer, for he has something to report to him.”
So now you and the council give notice to the commanding (chiliarchō | χιλιάρχῳ | dat sg masc) officer to bring him down to you, as though you were going to examine his case more accurately; and we will be ready to kill him before he gets there.”
And when the argument became violent, the commanding (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) officer (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc), afraid that Paul would be torn apart by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks.
Immediately those who were about to examine him drew back from him; and the commanding (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) officer was afraid, realizing that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him.
The commanding (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) officer (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) answered, “I obtained this citizenship with a large sum of money.” Paul answered, “But I was even born one.”
The commanding (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) officer (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) came to him and said, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” He replied, “Yes.”
When the centurion heard this, he went and reported to the commanding (chiliarchō | χιλιάρχῳ | dat sg masc) officer, saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.”
the commanding (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) officer (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) ordered Paul to be brought back into the barracks, saying that he should be examined with whips so that he might know the reason why they were shouting at him that way.
As he was about to be brought into the barracks, Paul said to the commanding (chiliarchō | χιλιάρχῳ | dat sg masc) officer, “Is it allowed for me to say something to you?” He replied, “Do you know Greek?
Then the commanding (chiliarchos | χιλίαρχος | nom sg masc) officer came up and arrested him and ordered him to be tied up with two chains. Then he asked who he might be and what he had done.
