A basilica (basilikhv) is a royal palace.

“Repent, for the βασιλεία of heaven is at hand.” (Matt 3:2)
Originally it meant "royal colonnade." In Latin its cognate means "a public hall with double colonnades," and came to be used of early Christian and medieval churches of a certain architectural type.
