spirit, Spirit; wind, breath; inner life
Pneumatology is the study of spiritual beings.
I knew it in my spirit!
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
oh what a foretaste of glory divine;
heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
“Unless one is born of water and πνεῦμα, they cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)
“The πνεῦμα blows wherever it chooses, and you hear its sound, but do not know where it is coming from or where it is going.” (John 3:8)
By "Spirit" we mean the Holy Spirit. Remember, in Greek there are no silent consonants, so the pi is pronounced; unlike in English where, for example, the "p" is not pronounced in the word, "pneumatic."
| Acts 19:13 | But some also of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those having evil spirits (pneumata | πνεύματα | acc pl neut), saying, “I adjure you by that Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” |
| Acts 19:15 | But the evil spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) answering said to them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” |
| Acts 19:16 | And the man in whom was the evil spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) leaped on them, took control and overpowered all seven of them, so that they fled, naked and wounded, out of that house. |
| Acts 19:21 | Now after all these things had taken place, Paul resolved in spirit (pneumati | πνεύματι | dat sg neut) to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and on to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” |
| Acts 20:22 | And now, compelled by the Spirit (pneumati | πνεύματι | dat sg neut), I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, |
| Acts 20:23 | except that the Holy Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) testifies to me, saying that in every city imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me. |
| Acts 20:28 | Watch out for yourselves and for all the flock in which the Holy Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) has placed you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he purchased with the blood of his own Son. |
| Acts 21:4 | After locating the disciples, we stayed there seven days; and they kept telling Paul through the Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut) not to set foot in Jerusalem. |
| Acts 21:11 | He came to us and, taking Paul’s belt, he tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) says this: ‘This is how the Jews will tie up in Jerusalem the man whose belt this is, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” |
| Acts 23:8 | (For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel nor spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | acc sg neut), but the Pharisees confess them all.) |
| Acts 23:9 | Then there arose a great uproar, and certain of the scribes of the party of the Pharisees stood up and protested vigorously, saying, “We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) or an angel has spoken to him?” |
| Acts 28:25 | And not being in harmony among themselves, they departed after Paul made one further statement. “The Holy Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: |
| Romans 1:4 | and was designated Son of God with power according to the spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | acc sg neut) of holiness by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. |
| Romans 1:9 | For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit (pneumati | πνεύματι | dat sg neut) in the gospel of his Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you |
| Romans 2:29 | But a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit (pneumati | πνεύματι | dat sg neut) and not by the written code. That person’s praise comes not from man but from God. |
| Romans 5:5 | and hope does not disappoint us, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut) who was given to us. |
| Romans 7:6 | But now we have been released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut) and not under the old written code. |
| Romans 8:2 | For the law of the Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut) of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. |

| Romans 8:5 | For those who live according to the flesh have set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | acc sg neut) have set their minds on the things of the Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut). |
| Romans 8:6 | To set the mind on the flesh leads to death, but to set the mind on the Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut) brings life and peace, |
| Romans 8:9 | You, however, are not controlled by the flesh but by the Spirit (pneumati | πνεύματι | dat sg neut), if indeed the Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) of God lives in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | acc sg neut) of Christ does not belong to him. |
| Romans 8:10 | But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) is life because of righteousness. |
| Romans 8:11 | But if the Spirit (pneuma | πνεῦμα | nom sg neut) of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit (pneumatos | πνεύματος | gen sg neut) who lives in you. |
| Romans 8:13 | for if you live according to the flesh, you will certainly die; but if by the Spirit (pneumati | πνεύματι | dat sg neut) you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. |
