Ecstasy (e[kstasiV) is to stand outside of oneself.
When ἐκ is followed by a word beginning with a vowel, it is written ἐξ.
If you are really curious, the preposition proper is ἐξ. When it is followed by a word beginning with a consonant, the "sigma" in the ξι drops out (think of ξ as "xs") because it is an "interconsonantal sigma," i.e., the sigma occurs between two consonants (εξσ + consonant goes to εξ to ἐκ).
