Because of the word's meaning, it can never occur in the nominative; so for this word the lexical form is the genitive singular. It follows the same inflectional pattern as αὐτός. ἑαυτου can also be translated in the plural as a first ("ourselves") or second ("yourselves") person.

Rather, when they measure themselves (heautous | ἑαυτούς | acc pl masc3rd) by themselves (heautois | ἑαυτοῖς | dat pl masc3rd) and compare themselves (heautous | ἑαυτούς | acc pl masc3rd) by themselves (heautois | ἑαυτοῖς | dat pl masc3rd), they are without understanding.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves (heautous | ἑαυτούς | acc pl masc2nd) to see if you are in the faith. Test yourselves (heautous | ἑαυτούς | acc pl masc2nd). Or do you not realize about yourselves (heautous | ἑαυτούς | acc pl masc2nd), that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless, of course, you fail the test!
