When the soldiers (stratiōtai | στρατιῶται | nom pl masc) crucified Jesus, they took his garments and separated them into four shares, one share for each soldier (stratiōtē | στρατιώτῃ | dat sg masc). They also took his tunic, which was seamless, woven from top to bottom as a single piece.
