For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man; for many times it had seized him and he was kept (edesmeueto | ἐδεσμεύετο | imperf pass ind 3 sg) under guard and bound with chains and shackles, yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.
